Gameplay
The once peaceful village of Clandeston is torn by argument and crime so Enk, a PeaceWright fresh out of the Academy, is sent to restore order. He is keen to exercise his brand new authority and show these backward villagers how to behave. With every case he solves he will be promoted.
But Enk is greeted rudely by the Lady who resents the cost of providing him with an office in her castle. She doesn’t want him to send people to the dungeon as she’d rather hang peasants than feed them. All she wants Enk to do is to keep out of her way.
Worse, when Enk goes out on his first mission, all the village folk hide. They have never seen a gypsy before, as they are only ordinary giants, goblins and trolls.
Enk investigates his first crime scene where a kindly old woman giant has lost her cat. Enk interviews suspects, examines clues, and chooses a suspect to arrest or warn. If he makes a mistake, they berate him, providing more information if he warns them rather than arresting them. The Detective Power in the Sky can provide a hint. Enk keeps going until he finally arrests or warns the guilty villager. If the game is played again the culprit will probably be a different villager, so Enk must learn to pay attention to the sounds of the physical clues, not the dialogue.
The witch is a suspect at every crime scene and criticises Enk constantly, scorning him as incompetent. After each mystery is solved, Enk returns to his office where he finds a gift (for a successful warning) or trophy (for a successful arrest). This is full size if he picked the culprit without error. A plaque shows his new status, with a gold star for every mission completed without consulting the Detective Power in the Sky. Enk can rearrange his gifts and trophies or consult his map and go to solve more crimes.
With every mission, Enk finds out more and more about the underlying problem in the village. The day grows later as he completes major missions. After he has solved the kidnapping of the troll baby, Enk can forgo any remaining minor missions and go straight on to solve the poisoned well mystery. This will lead to the ending where he must choose to save or burn the witch, and whether to leave with his new rank of Champion PeaceWright or stay and fight for the village.
